Why is Music Important

Music is an important part of every child’s life at Cowan House and it features on the timetable for Grade RRR to Grade 7. Whether it is in personal achievement on an instrument, singing favourite songs in class, being part of a bigger ensemble or dazzled by the lights on stage, music can be the most wonderful catalyst for personal growth, self-worth and character development.

WHAT DO WE OFFER

in SUMMARY

  • Musikgarten
  • Class Music
  • Marimbas
  • Choir
  • Private Musical Instrument Lessons
  • Performance Opportunities

Our superb purpose-built music department has a large class music room, a number of individual practice rooms, as well as a Marimba room specifically for marimba practices.  We have a number of pianos for pupils to practice on including a Sander upright piano and a mini-grand piano.

Musikgarten

  • Grade RRR to Grade R

The Pre-Primary classes have one lesson per week and we follow the Musikgarten scheme of work. This focuses on the core foundation elements of music (pulse, pitch and movement) as well as instilling the joy and fun of music.

Class Music

  • Grade 1 to Grade 7

Each class in Grade 1 to Grade 7 receives two 30 minute music lessons per week.  These involve: singing; learning about different instruments; reading and writing simple music notation through the playing of marimbas; recorders; classroom percussion instruments and individual composition; listening to a full range of music and learning about great composers and songwriters. We work to develop listening and appraising skills, self-confidence, self-expression and aesthetic appreciation.

Marimbas

  • Grade 4 to Grade 7

All pupils from Grade 4 to Grade 7 get the opportunity to play marimbas in class music lessons, and a Grade 5 and Grade 7 Marimba Band from part of our extra-curricular programme.  These groups have the opportunity to perform on a number of different occasions throughout the year.

Choir

  • Junior Choir: Grade 3
  • Senior Choir: Grade 4 - Grade 7

Our Junior Choir (Grade 3) gives an introduction to being part of a choir ‘team’, part-singing and performance. No audition is required and any Grade 3 child who wishes to join the choir is welcome to do so.

The Senior Choir (Grade 4 – Grade 7) enjoys regular performances in and out of the school campus. The Senior Choir is inclusive and now has over 80 full time members. We firmly believe that all children who show an interest in music at this stage, should have the opportunity to develop it. Our two main annual performances are the Easter and Carol Services. These special events are highly regarded by the children and parents.

Private Musical Instrument Lessons

  • Grade 1 - Grade 7

Children have the opportunity for private instrumental lessons and in any given week, more than 100 individual instrument lessons take place at school. Children learning instruments are encouraged to take Associated Board or Trinity examinations. Recent examination results include ABRSM Grade 5 distinction in Piano, Grade 3 distinction in Flute and Trinity Jazz Grade 4 merit in Saxophone.

We are proud to have had pupils awarded with major music scholarships to Hilton College, St John’s DSG and Epworth High School.

Performance Opportunities

  • Grade 1 - Grade 7

Extensive concert and performance opportunities help build confidence both as a soloist and in an ensemble, and are an essential part of a young person’s musical development. These performances range from our lunchtime concerts, to our more formal music evenings, and introduce our students to the thrill of performing in public and to the excitement of playing with other people and for other people.
